Back to Education and Restoration Cause
Three Lagoons Sustainability Program is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2017 by Edgar Deleon who wanted tour guides to gain a better understanding of Belize's beautiful subtropical rainforest.
Belize's natural 'capital' in the jungle is its ability to filter in excess carbon and pollutants and produce oxygen in order to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.
What started as a group for tour guides grew into a concern about the damage commercial industries are causing to riparian and littoral forests as well as beaches and shoals on the 66 Feet Reserve. In this reserve, all land up to 66 feet from the high-water levels are protected and must remain open to the public and be free from development.
Edgar focused his first efforts on the three main lagoons of Belize's Corozal and Orange Walk districts, Laguna Seca, Cocos, and Progresso, which form a mighty natural reserve that is home to several species of wildlife and provides natural resources for local villages.
There are three main initiatives of the Three Lagoons Sustainability Program (TLSP) for Belize's ecological health:
1) Every two weeks - Garbage Cleanup in local villages surrounding the lagoons
2) Eco-Guardians Education teaches children about the importance of protecting the natural resources around them
3) Reforestation Program to replant seedlings (mangrove and mahogany) in places that are damaged by commercial industries.
Cleanup, education, and replanting events are currently held by the TLSP every two weeks and is in need for reliable transportation to and from planting and cleanup sites, as well as supplies including seedlings, soil, sanitizer, trash bags, and water. An event costs ~US $250 for materials used including meals and transportation for the volunteers.
However, all this is only possible with the help of donors!
By setting up a US$100+ Yearly subscription you will be listed as an Annual Cause Supporter on the page of your chosen Cause. If you do not wish to be listed, please email us at donations@believeinbelize.org.
