Project Details

Introduction & Background

Placencia Village, located in southern Belize, Central America, is a vibrant community that has been transformed from a quiet fishing Village to a substantial boutique tourist destination in the past few years.   At present It does not have a maintained sports field or a covered area for its youth and adults to participate in recreational activities.   It also does not have a useable community center.

The Rotary Club of Placencia has for the last year has been investigating the feasibility of a project we now have named “Raise the Roof.” Our goal is to have a well maintained and equipped sport field suitable for a variety of sports and activities and a covered recreational area that would be used as both an indoor recreational area for school children and adults and a very much needed all weather community center for all its citizens and visitors.  It will be built on the present basketball court and the adjacent recreational sport field.  The facility(ies) will include the addition of proper washrooms, locker room(s) for the players, viewing stands, water storage tank for field irrigation, fencing of the complete sports complex including controllable entrances, concession stands, a portable stage, night lighting, weatherproof power outlets and the rehabilitation of the actual playing field.  The project will substantially enhance the present basketball court and playing field.  This location is at the very heart of Placencia Village.

Our vision includes the ability for the new and improved Sports Complex / Multi-Purpose Center to be financially self-sufficient.  A long-term maintenance program will be financed by revenues. It is anticipated that ongoing revenue will come from concession stand fees, game ticket sales, facility rentals, advertising and a few longer-term sponsors. A full-time Maintenance / Operations Manager is envisioned to provide an organized sustainable facility for years to come.

To date, we have completed the following:  retained an architect who has created renderings and plans for the project; consulted engineering experts to ensure the covered area will be built  to include hurricane Category Five requirements; had an official, legal land survey completed; obtained necessary governmental commitments and approvals, including a contract that these areas will be controlled by The Rotary Club of Placencia for the use of the areas youth and adult citizens and undertaken cost estimates.  We have also raised a considerable amount of funding to begin our Project.  See below for these figures.

To accomplish this ambitious and much needed project we now need more assistance.  As part of the project, major donations (whether monetary or in kind) will be acknowledged in a public manner, incorporated into the very structure of the area.  Please consider helping us to fund this project!  Should the reader require any further information or clarification of the above, please contact us.
