Project Goal Date: June 1, 2024

Keller Williams in Belize is pairing up with Rotary Club of Placencia and Believe in Belize to raise $15,000 USD to create a Library/Resource Center and Kitchen at the San Juan Bosco Primary School in the village of Cowpen in Southern Stann Creek, Belize. Donations from this project are critical to the future success of the children in this village.

Project Details

The Public Primary School in San Juan/Cowpen has an enrollment of 350 students.  In 2018 they were donated a building but no additional funds came in to finish it so the building sat empty and out of necessity they put in a kitchen.  In order to have a fully functioning library the kitchen needs to be moved to a new space and the existing building needs to be cleaned and renovated.

Funds raised in this project will be used to build a kitchen on the side of the building that is to be used for both teachers and students for breakfast and lunch. Once this is completed the current building will need to be refurbished to be suitable for the library and resource center. The library needs solid windows, ceiling fans, new lighting, bookshelves, benches, tables and upgraded electrical and plumbing.

Less than 50% of students entering pre-school have books in their homes and parents rarely have a high school education. In Belize, 8 per cent of children do not complete primary school and 31 per cent do not complete secondary school.

There are currently no books in the library, so donors are also asked to donate books and send to Belize. If sufficient funds are raised the project can also be used to help with shipping expenses for the books.

The goal is to raise these funds prior to the summer so when the children are out of school the repairs can begin and be completed prior to schools reopening in late August.
