Through a generous donation of 10 used sewing machines by the Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview (https://www.facebook.com/edmontonriverviewrotary), Believe in Belize launched a pilot microlending service.  We are thankful for the Rotary Club of Placencia (http://placencia-rotary.squarespace.com/) for identifying the recipients and deploying the machines on our behalf.

Basically, 8 machines went to Georgetown Technical (GT) High School (http://gttech.edu.bz/) and 2 machines went to Toma Sewing (TS) School in Santa Cruz (both located in Stann Creek district).  In-lieu of traditional microlending where loan are repaid with interest, this model is somewhat different.  At GT, school uniforms are made as part of the teaching experience and sold at a discount. At TS, students learn to sew for free.
